Five female actors at a performing arts college with various strong and distinct personalities during a night of heavy drinking as jealousy rears its ugly head...what could possibly go wrong? Take my word for it...it does. This is 90 minutes of intense.

Convergence-Continuum’s production of macbitches by Sophie McIntosh, directed by Kate Smith, is a visceral, disturbing, and truthful work that raises issues surrounding young actors in an academic setting. The intensity of this work’s unapologetic revelation of young female BFA in Theatre students’ “burst” of frustration and jealousy, along with a constant fear of being “cast aside,” is comparable to that of Alexis Scheer’s Our Dear Dead Drug Lord, a play about high-school girls’ competitiveness, ambition, control over others, rituals, and obsession with their “hero,” Pablo Escobar.

Under Barclay’s direction, which emphasizes a blend of dark, serious, mildly comedic, real, and surreal elements, the performers—Demanelis as Anne, Atkinson as Genevieve, Starkman as Isabel, Frye as Steve, Centeno as Juan/John, Bartlett as Faceless Ghost, and McFadden as Mary—articulate Arbery’s words with effective, rhythmic clarity. Demanelis, Atkinson, and Starkman place their characters in the real and the surreal, emphasizing their quiet chaos, confusion, and madness in a compelling and peculiar way. Somehow, however, the audience seems to miss the subtle humor embedded in the script.

While not a bad production by any means, I simply found my mind wondering and my eyes checking my watch during the performance. While a believable premise, the show simply failed to engage me. I have no problems with the subject matter...just the presentation. Buy a ticket and see if you agree.

Take a blender and mix equal parts of Stoker’s classic, Monty Python, Mel Brooks and Ken Ludwig. Blend until smooth and drink it up in one quick intermission free 100 minutes of mad cap farce that will having you screaming with laughter rather than terror. This is the perfect season to check out this masterpiece of absurdity.

There are so many vampire stories out there that you’d assume that we’d have tired of the blood-sucking, garlic-fearing monsters by now. Yet, their appeal is seemingly as death-defying as the creatures themselves, especially when they are portrayed with slapstick absurdity.

To see a full review of this show, read Gwendolyn's review here.

Dr. Yuko Kurahashi
As the press release states, Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors, written by Gordon Greenberg and Steve Rosen, directed by Scott Zolkowski, is a “Bram” new comedy (referring to Bram Stoker, the author of his 1897 Gothic novel), filled with clever wordplay and numerous pop culture references, all condensed into a 90-minute show. The work is a witty spoof of a solemn, dark, gothic story, imbued with cultural and social attributes of Victorian values. Identifying, underscoring, and then caricaturing different literacy and cultural gears and elements in Bram’s work, as normal and “ideal”—like decorum, suppression of desires, inhumanity in the medical profession, patriarchy, capitalism, and other “conventions” that divide the world into two groups—good and evil—are challenged in Greenberg and Rosen’s script, which allows each theatre company to develop its creative interpretations and staging devices.

We Are Continuous @ Convergence-Continuum

Through August 31, 2025
(216) 687-0074

Mark Horning

Forget for a moment that this is a gay play. Look at it instead as a representation of the evolution of acceptance by friends and family. The acting is at times genuinely funny, at times poignant, at times dramatic, at times tragic and at all times totally entertaining. This is what great theater is all about...exposing us to ideas no matter what our thoughts or beliefs may be. It will be time well spent.

To see a full review of this show, read Mark Horning's Review here.

Gwendolyn Kochur

“we are continuous” is far from the first show to explore gay or bi-racial relationships. Nor is it rare in how it explores themes of family, acceptance and forgiveness. Instead, convergence-continuum’s show distinguishes itself by the unique way in which it journeys through those explorations: directly and with immense sincerity.

Dr. Yuko Kurahashi
The Convergence Continuum production of we are continuous, written by Harrison David Rivers and directed by Jeannine Taskin and Lauren Lash, is a touching, moving, and significant work, especially today when the putting down of humans and nature, including children and young adults by rich, judgmental, powerful, self-serving, and hypocritical older or old adults becomes the national and hegemonic norm and standard.

THIS SIDE OF CRAZY

December 6 - 21, 2024

216-687-0074 or https://www.convergence-continuum.org

Dr. Yuko Kurahashi

A contemporary Southern American Gothic, This Side of Crazy resonates with Flannery O’Connor and Beth Henley,  as it presents to the audience who surrounds the performance space from two sides in an L shape, skeletons in their “closets” just like Sam Shepard did in his dysfunctional family dramas. The “closets” are, in this play, different parts of the house of Ditty Blaylock, who lives with her eldest daughter, a “social media evangelist,” and her incapacitated husband Jude (played by a simulated patient).

SPEECH AND DEBATE is a well-conceived and written play that gets a very creditable production at con-con.

Chris Howey

The production under the direction of Léo Fez feels rushed, and the bulldozed pacing results in scenes that are incomplete. This happens since the feelings of the characters seem unearned, and that leaves the audience in the lurch.

It’s a far off flight of fancy that with a little tightening up could be a really great show. As it stands it is still worth the price of a ticket for its telling of the immigration issue that we are currently going through world wide. Check out this show.

Chris Howey

"This is an ambitious sci-fi piece and it has some amusing moments. But the combination of heavy-handed lecturing, a fondness for repetition, and an Act Two that includes dialog spoken in Chinese and Spanish (translated to English on a screen) slows the pace of the show to a spacewalk."

This show takes wholesome characters that we all loved and grew up with and turns them on their ear. It’s a warped version of “Real Housewives of Wonderland” as they cut each other to ribbons and with all manner of addictions sweeping through the magic kingdom. It is a hoot and a half proving that happily ever after is not what it is cracked up to be. Bring your adult Prince Charming or Princess along for a good laugh.

THE GROWN-UP, while fulfilling con-con’s purpose of expanding human imagination and extending the conventional boundaries of language, structure, space and performance, continues the pattern of presenting challenging plays that fits the likes of their core audience.  As with most the theatre’s offerings, this offering is both challenging and thought-provoking.  It is a quick and interesting experience.

If you are a fan of Con-Con you will love this show. For first time attendees it may throw you off just a bit but not to worry, just enjoy the ride and don’t fret over the details. After all this is Con-Con whose purpose is to expand our way of looking at theater through the use of interesting language, structure, space and content. Bring your imagination and enjoy a dazzling 90 minute no-intermission trip of fantasy.

Walking To Buchenwald @ Convergence-Continuum

Through June 24, 2023

Roy Berko

Every once in a while a director and actors shine, while the script they are working with doesn’t really deserve to garner the quality.  This is the case of WALKING TO BUCHENWALD, the Tom Jacobson play now on stage at convergence-continuum.

To see a full review of this show, read Roy Berko's blog here.

Mark Horning

With a little bit of tightening up this could be an extremely funny and moving show except for the ending that just goes phiff as the cast suddenly goes meandering off to Buchenwald following a dramatic medical situation.

To see a full review of this show, read Mark Horning's Review here.

Chris Howey

In Walking to Buchenwald, now at Convergence-Continuum theater, the innovative playwright Tom Jacobson attempts to achieve the kind of lift-off provided by such contrasting tones. (He has done similar kinds of tricks in other works, and Con-Con did one full justice 14 years ago with his time-twisting play Ouroboros.) But in this instance, due to a volley of pedestrian jokes and some weak writing decisions, a script that starts out playing it all for laughs later turns into a mystifying slog.

The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told @ Convergence-Continuum

Through December 17, 2022
https://www.convergence-continuum.org/
(216) 687-0074

Roy Berko

THE MOST FABULOUS STORY EVER TOLD will delight con-con regulars and intentionally upset the religious up-tight.  But, as Rudnick stated about detractors, "tell them I spoke to God personally and he said they're wrong."

To see a full review of this show, read Roy Berko's blog here.

Howard Gollop

Rudnick's gay humor resonates at the convergence-continuum theater even if many of the jokes are past their expiration date, and the cast and crew put forth a noble effort. Still, considering even the original 1998 off-Broadway production faltered, it would be unfair to expect much more than a frivolous, if confusing, evening of "you-go-girl" fun.

Mark Horning

If you are a religiously uptight individual this is definitely not the play for you to see. With tickets selling fast it would be best for those who appreciate wacky irreverent humor to have their chance to attend. This is a production for the extremely open minded. Bigots need not apply.

To see a full review of this show, read Mark Horning's Review here.

Chris Howey

"While several of the playwright's topical japes and jabs have lost their punch, there are still more LOL moments in this play than in most other comedy scripts."

With a script that ranges from mildly disorienting to startlingly evocative, the director Jeannine Gaskin draws some excellent performances out of her nine-person cast. But what resonates most clearly is the need to confront and understand our past for, as George Orwell said and this play reminds us, "He who controls the past controls the future, and he who controls the present controls the past."

ANGRY FAGS at con-con

convergence-continuum
July 8-30, 2022

www.convergence-continuum.org

Roy Berko

Con-cons cult audience will be pleased by the presence of lots of male partial nudity, a non-traditional story, and the gay theme.  Others will be intrigued by the author’s ability to lead down one path and throw a curveball into the action and then surprise with a startling ending.  All in all, even with some of the weak performances, this is a production worth seeing.

Howard Gollop

Right off the bat (which happens to be a murder weapon in this play) Convergence-Continuum should be thanked profusely for bringing more unique, unsettling and vital theatre to Cleveland.

That being said, "Angry Fags" is not without problems.

With a play that begins as "Boys in the  Band" and ends up as "Bonnie and Clyde" (albeit more perverse and dystopian), playwright Topher Payne  bites into a lot more political and philosophical meat than he can chew.

Although quite earnest and intent, the nonprofessional cast might be in over their heads -- as is director Scott Zolkowski, although he's to be commended for navigating so well through a tight budget in an even tighter performance space

Despite its powerful moments, the production fails to remediate the discordant tonal problems of the script, much less hone in on the nuances (and humor) that would make underwritten characters compelling, or at least worth more empathy.
