This is an intense watch as the tension is developed early and built on throughout the show. Weighing in at a little over two and a half hours with a twenty minute intermission the time flies by. Weathervane Playhouse has a monster hit on their hands whose complexity will amaze you.

Joshua Larkin excels at shaping group dynamics that clarify situations, circumstances, ambiance, and collective power. Instead of treating the townsfolk as a single group in the opening scene, Larkin’s choreography calls for distinct groupings—male, female, young, older, white, and Black.

Set Designer/Technical Director Richard Morris, Jr. designed and built a simple yet effective stage featuring a central platform and brick back walls—stage right and stage left—with alcoves for performers to stand or sit. The central stage is manually rotated by the actors, who push it, maximizing Brechtian effects (with the audience aware of the theater’s mechanism) and is frequently used by the ensemble.

Be in for a huge surprise when you enter this amazing community theater. There you will be awed by a meticulously constructed stage set along with sumptuous costuming as well as one of the most professionally acted comedies ever. The laughs come easy and often as the hapless Mortimer tries to keep his cool in the home he grew up in and never suspected as being a private cemetery. Tickets will be scarce for this one so order early.

Once again Weathervane Playhouse has risen to the challenge and staged a very complex musical production that is pleasing to all the senses. With a wink and a nod the cast lets us in on the fun of this family friendly show with a message. Come be dazzled.

This show has a tremendous amount of heart and nothing is left on the stage. It is a show that will tug on all of your emotions. You will laugh, cry, ponder, reflect and pray along with the cast as they sweep you along in a fast paced “screech”.

For the older crowd, this is music we all grew up with and learned to love but will also be appreciated by today’s youngsters. Each performance shines with brilliance. Comments from those exiting the theater were 100% positive.

If you have never seen the movie or play before then you are in for a treat. The great stage set, costuming, accents and acting are all top notch. It is also brilliant the manner of breaking up the show into three short acts with two intermissions so as to give the audience a break. BRAVO all the way! If you have seen it before, it is time to see it once more.

Sometimes theater becomes much more than an entertainment enterprise. There are times such as this when it becomes a rousing sacred experience with a strong life lesson thrown in for good measure. Buy a ticket and be swept away. Somebody say Amen.

The real secret to pulling off “Joseph” is to keep the action moving at a breakneck pace, having exemplary singing and dancing and a group not shy about singing loudly as a group. This production delivers on all of these counts and then some. Make the drive to Akron and see this exceptional work.

Do not (like I did) put off making the short trip to Akron to visit Weathervane Playhouse. This show features a superb cast, great orchestra, ingenious stage set and superb lighting and sound. Forget the movie and see how the original darker story plays out. Buy a ticket!
