CANADIAN GOTHIC & AMERICAN MODERN @ Cesear's Forum

"Canadian Gothic" & "American Modern"
Cesear's Forum
September 26th through October 25th
216-241-6000 | www.playhousesquare.org

Gwendolyn Kochur
When audiences leave a show, it’s common to hear them chatting about how much they loved a production or making special note of which moments were their favorite. The conversation following a showing of “Canadian Gothic” and “American Modern” is more nuanced; you’ll be wondering at the reasoning behind artistic choices, or explaining your interpretation of the work and its structure, comparing and contrasting your analysis with your guest.

In both plays, McClelland Glass gives the audience a glimpse of the lives of small, remote townspeople, filled with mundane chores and repetition. Canadian Gothic, set in a town in Saskatchewan, McClelland Glass’s home province, depicts the couple’s apathy, followed by the wife’s death and their daughter’s interracial dating. These events lead to a violent incident that determines the characters’ future, contrary to their expectations or wishes. In American Modern, the wife copes with her depression by consuming herself with super-busy, mundane tasks.  Her additional coping mechanism includes scavenging and holding what she discovers in her neighborhood. In both plays, the husband character is quite passive and unfeeling (or he tries to suppress his feelings), as many of us do—“do nothing.”

Cesear’s Forum is staging two short plays by Lanford Wilson—Ludlow Fair (1965) and The Madness of Lady Bright (1964), co-directed by Greg Cesear and Tricia Bestic. Attending two of Wilson’s earliest plays offers me the opportunity to contemplate what these two American plays of the Absurd might mean to contemporary audiences.  As a theatre historian, I naturally try to put them in the social and cultural context of its creation period.

“A shattering yet thoroughly entertaining journey, this 110-minute one-act is a demanding acting challenge, and fortunately longtime Cesear's Forum actor Julia Kolibab is more than equal to the task.

COPENHAGEN @ Cesear's Forum

September 20-October 26
216-241-6000 or www.playhousesquare.org

Roy Berko

“Copenhagen” continues Cesear’s Forum for doing small cast, high quality, thought provoking plays, that draw in a thinking crowd.  Though a long sit, the play is an idea-expanding experience that is well-worth seeing.

PLATH AND ORION, Two one-Act Plays @ Cesear's Forum

PLATH AND ORION
Kennedy's Down Under in the Playhouse Square Complex
September 21-Ocober 27 (Friday and Saturday @ 8)
216-241-6000
Bob Abelman

The simple title given this collection of one-acts – “Plath and Orion” – only hints at what lies in store in what amounts to an enthralling evening of theater.

Though some may find the show, especially the second act, obtuse and overly intellectual, Cesear’s Forum again displays that it doesn’t take a big budget, massive sets and ornate costumes to present effective theater, in this case, its exceptional performances.

Although the material is often fast moving and sometimes densely intellectual, the experience is heightened since it displays the extraordinary talents of four of our area’s finest actors: Rachel Lee Kolis, Aimee Collier, Mary Alice Beck and Julia Kolibab.

Cesear’s Forum stages ‘Life x 3,’ offers schadenfreude on steroids.

There are aspirations to the metaphysical in Reza’s script, but the repeated renditions don’t provide the necessary snap of realization that is required to bring the audience along. Instead, by the end, it feels as if we’ve been stumbling through several rough drafts of a piece that isn’t quite finished.

Cesear’s Forum, which has won both Cleveland Critics Circle and Times Theatre Tribute recognition for past performances, again proves, with LANFORD WILSON:  TAKE 5, that it doesn’t take a big budget, massive sets and ornate costumes to present wonderful and effective theater. Kudos!!

THE INVESTIGATION@CESAR'S FORUM

October 16 through November 14, 2015

216-241-6000

Bob Abelman

The current staging of this play by Cesear’s Forum is lifeless.  This is because director Greg Cesear has little faith that the words can speak for themselves and offers his assistance to make the play – a dramatic rendering of court transcripts – more inventive.

To see a full review of this show, read Bob Abelman's blog here.

Roy Berko

My ride home after Cesear’s Forum’s THE INVESTIGATION was done in silence.  I sit here now, trying to write a review, with welled eyes.  Oh, the inhumanity of man.

To see a full review of this show, read Roy Berko's blog here.

Christine Howey
While The Investigation does not succeed, it is one more example of the risks Greg Cesear and his troupe love to take. And for that, they deserve a deep bow.

OCCUPANT @ Cesear's Forum in Kennedy's Down Under

September 19-October 25, 2014
216-241-6000 or go to http://www.playhousesquare.org

Roy Berko

“Occupant” is one of those special plays and theatrical presentations that will be greatly appreciated by the serious theater-goer who likes to be exposed to a well-written, thinking person’s play, which gets a fine staging and interpretation.

Christine Howey

With apologies to Mr. Albee, the best thing about this production is the acting. Under the precise direction of Greg Cesear.

Andrea Simakis

In this engaging, ethereal Q & A, [Edward] Albee both eulogizes his friend [artist Louise Nevelson] and fans the flame of her legend.

PERHAPS PERICLES
Cesear's Forum

Roy Berko

For those who are interested in seeing a version of what may be the very little performed PERHAPS PERICLES, the Cesear Forum’s showing is a good opportunity.

To see a full review of this show, read Roy Berko's blog here.

Fran Heller

The play is a seriocomic look at one of Shakespeare's most convoluted plots, a meandering tale of incest, murder, a pair of shipwrecks, prostitution and piracy.
The two-act, 90 minute production proves that good acting, minimalism and a hefty imagination is all that's needed for a pleasant evening of condensed Shakespeare, upfront, close and personal.

Christine Howey

Written in verse and clotted with plotting detritus, it's often hard to pull apart what's happening. The language (much of it, one assumes, authored by the less-than-iconic Wilkins) is often torturously dense and defiantly indecipherable. With all that convoluted storytelling this show is, miraculously, often quite funny.

Cesear’s Forum’s production philosophy centers on making social commentary while presenting experimental theatre.  Though not a traditional type of production, the evening of one-acts is a good example of thoughtful theatre.

Fran Heller

Looking for a challenging evening of theater?
Consider the pair of one-acts being produced by Cesear's Forum: "Elegy for a Lady" by Arthur Miller (1915-2005) and "Three Women" by Sylvia Plath (1932-63)
Expressionistic in nature, elusive in understanding, this is an evening for the adventurous and open-minded theatergoer interested in sampling lesser works by these two American literary giants.
