      WORTH NOTING:

In order to bring attention to local productions of merit at theaters that are not on the Cleveland Critics Circle’s approved Equity Theater list, members of the Circle who attend a community or educational theater production that is perceived as of high quality will have the option of listing that production on the CCC blogsite.  These review(s) fall into that category.

Dane CT Leasure brings each performer’s uniqueness to the fore, infusing their personalities and traits into their characters. Kayla Streem’s mermaid, deprived of her voice, embodies bewilderment and helplessness yet shows adaptability. Katie Soltis’s Sleeping Beauty is an innocent, unquestioning princess who develops an attitude influenced by Lila Wagner-Gleeson’s Princess from “The Princess and the Pea,’ who puffs a cigarette and drinks liquor from a flask, far from the Anderson version of the princess, who is considered sensitive and considerate. Ilse Zijlstra, as Rapunzel, demonstrates a strong voice and animated, expressive facial expressions.

The docudrama "The Agitators" at Rubber City Theatre, theater in residence at the University of Akron, is such a beautifully intimate and educational exploration of the extraordinary, long-standing friendship between 19th century cultural icons Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass, it's a must-see.

Rubber City Theatre's adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's "An Enemy of the People" is a chilling modern-day version that sets this battle of right vs. might in a Trump-era, mid-sized Rust-Belt city.

... The play, performed without intermission and directed by Lana Sugarman, is highly thought-provoking. The problem is, the quality of the acting is inconsistent among four of the eight cast members.

If you are looking for an underground hero that makes good kind of show...forget it. This play is a real downer. In this tale of greed at all expense the bad guys win, the good guys lose and innocent people may get sick and die as a result. It is a raw story right out of today’s headlines and a cautionary tale of what continues to happen since 1882 when the play was first written. No sugar coating on this one but more a strong taste of bitter salt. Good Theater!

The quality of performance was a mixed bag last weekend in Frank Loesser’s classic “Guys and Dolls” at Rubber City Theatre. The show’s biggest problems were weak dancing by the cast and an anemic-sounding orchestra, which was most obvious during the overture.

This company of saints and sinners evoke a simpler time and provide a gentle, entertaining evening in the theater.

Tania Benites is very likable as heroine Viola, who falls for Orsino on the spot, and Katie Wells is humorous as Olivia, who is immediately smitten with Cesario, the young man Viola is posing as. The story presents a bit of a complicated love triangle as Viola refuses Orsino’s amorous advances.

Added to the mix are an assortment of servants, friends and relatives, chief among them Olivia’s scoundrel uncle Sir Toby Belch (Sean Taylor) and his ridiculous sidekick, Sir Andrew Aguecheek (Matthew Wheeler). Taylor is humorous when his Toby goes on a drunken tear but the actor tends to yell too much.
