I am a strong advocate for theatre.  But, I have to be honest. The best I can say is, if you’d like to suffer through 90-minutes of an absolutely poorly written theatrical concept, EXIT, PURSUED BY A BEAR is the play for you!

The wayward and weirdly flaccid production of this self-described revenge comedy by Lauren Gunderson is so absent of humor, it could be medically prescribed as a soporific for those needing coma-level sleep.

This is a dramatic message musical which deserves the accolades which it has won.  It gets a must-see production, with the caveat that audience members be aware of the subject matter.

This is the kind of show that runs you ragged through a revolving door of emotions, but makes you think and feel and keep on feeling long after the curtain call.

While this production will have close to sold out audiences throughout its run, it may not be the show for everyone. If you are sensitive to subjects such as mental illness, compulsive behavior, extensive family control and suicide it may not be your cup of Ovaltine. Otherwise, it is great theater.

Fun Home is a play dealing with heavy topics, but Kron's sharp wit and Tesori's evocative music save the day. And under the wise and thoughtful direction of Joanna May Cullinan, it becomes one of those musicals that, if you put in the effort, will reside within you long after the curtain falls.

SIX THE MUSICAL

SIX:  THE MUSICAL
Connor Palace

Younger audience members will be turned on by the musical style which is pop and hip-hop and literally invites them to yell, clap, sing and jump out of their seats as if at a rave.  Those of a certain age and/or of conservative political/social attitudes may want to cover their ears from the beating sounds and “course” language.  All in all, the clever concept of the show and the talented ensemble will enchant many more audience members than those who might be turned off.  Me?  I loved it!!  More please, I want some more.

Howard Gollop

Each performer is sensational, and the show never stops being fun (with Lucy Moss' and Jamie Armitages's energizing direction and Carrie-Anne Ingrouille's arena-concert choreography). The nods to modern feminist mores -- with all of the characters realizing that they do not need the context of their shared husband to be historically relevant -- are enlightening without becoming preachy. Forget anything by PBS. Considering even the onstage musicians are attractive and talented females, this show makes the perfect stage companion to the runaway film hit also about female awakening -- "Barbie."

Sheri Gross

Suffice it to say, the show is not only a blast, but a vehicle that brings women to the forefront; both theatrically and historically, in a creative and innovative way. Grabbing a front row seat for this one is a “no brainer.” (groan)

While I only heard half of the show as my finger was firmly planted into my right ear during the entire show due to the vocal exuberance of some young “ladies” seated nearby it was in fact an exciting show that lasts just long enough. It’s a history lesson concert put to a driving beat that will have many screaming and dancing in their seats. You will love it but don’t forget the ear plugs.

Part rock concert, part feminist revenge, SIX at Playhouse Square combines today’s pop and yesteryear’s British history. Last Wednesday’s performance lit up the Connor Palace stage with bouncy, ear-shaking dance and music that reflected the spirit of our times.

*****

Bottom Line: A light look at Tudor history through today’s eyes. (Rock newbies might want to bring ear plugs — it got loud.) I only wish Henry could have been there to see the show.

History is INTERESTING again! Although many people might remember history class as a boring experience of memorizing dates and names without much substance (at least that was my experience), SIX brings life and shimmer to the wives of Henry VIII.

What does this mean? It means you’re in for 80-minutes (no intermission) of non-stop contest magic, where each fierce female vies for votes for having the “worst” story about her marriage to Henry VIII (King of England from 1509 to 1547). The pop concert vibe feels like a mix of Spice Girls, Beyonce, J Lo, Rihanna, Britney, and more as the ladies tell their tales about how things ended: “divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived.”

Roy Berko

ERMA BOMBECK:  AT WIT’S END, CPH’s “pre-season treat,” will delight those of a “certain age” who are familiar with the era and role of women as described in Bombeck’s references.  Modern feminists will roll their eyes at many of her situational references.

Howard Gollop

Mark Cuddy's knowing direction nevertheless keeps the evening alive and even manages to enhance the vague dramatic arch of the script. Perhaps after a few more productions, Pam Sherman will embody Erma Bombeck inwardly as she does outwardly. But even as the show now stands, the titular Erma Bombeck proves to be not only the real star but the able "ghostwriter" who keeps the production entertaining and at times even enchanting. Despite the show's title, there certainly is no end to Erma Bombeck's wit.

The assemblage created by the Engels manages to highlight some of Bombeck's better gags (on Regrets: "Think of all those women on the Titanic who waved off the dessert cart.") Roy Berko

As is the case with modern American musicals, THE PROM harks back to a Rodgers and Hammerstein-like social message of tolerance and the need to accept the beliefs and needs of others.  It is extremely relevant to today where the rights of sexual minorities, especially trans-individuals, is under both physical and political attack by right-wing bigots.  The Porthouse production, is well-conceived and brings to a conclusion a successful season.

To make familiar stories like Leap of Faith come alive, the performers need to find some special juju to fashion characters we can be passionate about. The stage was constantly displaying well-conceived stage pictures, the choreography was not only creative, but visually encapsulating, and the entire production was a master class in how to create an audience pleasing show that developed the intent and purpose of the author. As charming and evocative as the fairytale storyline may be (ingeniously scripted by Lyricist Lynn Ahrens), what really elevates the Beck Center production into the magical experience is the surprisingly elevated production team of Broadway-caliber director-choreographer Christopher Chase Carter, scenic designer Cherri DeVol (as exuberantly lit by Emma Hansen) and costume designer Inda Blatch-Geib.

RENT holds a special place in American Musical Theatre history, ushering in the era of the musical drama.  Though, thanks to science, we are long past the time when AIDS was a sure-thing death sentence, because politicians such as President Ronald Reagan and NY mayor Ed Koch denied the existence of AIDS and denied funding for research, causing many unnecessary deaths, the power of the music and the development of the characters makes it a special script with a well-honed production.  THIS IS A WELL-HONED PRODUCTION!  Standing O!

MOULIN ROUGE ! THE MUSICAL

MOULIN ROUGE!  THE MUSICAL

KEY BANK BROADWAY SERIES--KEY BANK STATE THEATRE

JUNE 7-JULY 2, 2023

216-241-6000 or playhousesquare.org

Roy Berko

MOULIN ROUGE! THE MUSICAL is not a great musical, but it will entertain anyone who wants to escape from the real world for a couple of hours and allow the sets, costumes, choreography, singing, performances and melodramatic sit-com plot, carry you to escape to early 1900’s gay Paree.  Be ready for a dynamic crowd involving curtain call!

To see a full review of this show, read Roy Berko's blog here.

Howard Gollop

It may make some classic-film devotees pine for the original 1952 version of "Moulin Rouge" -- sans the exclamation point. That's director John Huston's assiduously recreated milieu of the real Moulin Rouge, where Toulouse Lautrec (played here by the normal-sized, likable Nick Rashad Burroughs) is a genuine artist and not one of a threesome of virtual ne'er-do-well frat boys (the character Christian hales from western Ohio) pitching an impromptu musical to their adored chanteuse star (which is sort of the "American in Paris" or backstage-musical part of the show). A more refined, adult "Moulin Rouge" of John Huston's calibre will have to wait. Until then, the junk-food pleasures of this version satiates any entertainment void, and it's a sure sugar rush.

To see a full review of this show, read Howard Gollop's review here.

Sheri Gross

The show itself is a mixed bag in every way. The storyline is entertaining, yet a bit flimsy. The music is a blast, yet frantic in spots. The production values are a feast for your eyes, yet overstimulating at times. And the cast is uber talented, yet a bit uneven.

Every once in a while a director and actors shine, while the script they are working with doesn’t really deserve to garner the quality.  This is the case of WALKING TO BUCHENWALD, the Tom Jacobson play now on stage at convergence-continuum.

To see a full review of this show, read Roy Berko's blog here.

Mark Horning

With a little bit of tightening up this could be an extremely funny and moving show except for the ending that just goes phiff as the cast suddenly goes meandering off to Buchenwald following a dramatic medical situation.

Chris Howey

In Walking to Buchenwald, now at Convergence-Continuum theater, the innovative playwright Tom Jacobson attempts to achieve the kind of lift-off provided by such contrasting tones. (He has done similar kinds of tricks in other works, and Con-Con did one full justice 14 years ago with his time-twisting play Ouroboros.) But in this instance, due to a volley of pedestrian jokes and some weak writing decisions, a script that starts out playing it all for laughs later turns into a mystifying slog.

Christopher Bohan as the priest, Derdriu Ring as the menacing principal, Gabriella O'Fallon as the young teacher and Tamara French, in the riveting all-too-brief role of the beleaguered mother of a problem child, triumph in spellbindingly nuanced performances. Likewise, the subtle but controlled direction by Donald Carrier and production team of scenic designer Jill Davis and lighting designer Adam Ditzel create a convincing world in the intimate studio theater as enveloping as the expansive 2008 film version.

DEAR EVAN HANSEN (Huntington Featured Performance)

Connor Palace

May 16-21, 2023

playhousesquare.org, 216-241-6000

Roy Berko

“DEAR EVAN HANSEN” is a mesmerizing evening of contemporary musical theater.  Complete with pop-contemporary music sounds, staged with narrative story-telling tunes, and a relevant story line, it is one of the finest examples of the new wave of musical dramas.  Don’t go expecting show-stoppers and an escapist plot.  This is life as it is being lived, with all its angst and issues.  The touring production, with choreography by Danny Mefford and direction by Michael Greif, is standing ovation worthy and is an absolutely must see!!

To see a full review of this show, read Roy Berko's blog here.

Howard Gollop

If you missed the poorly attended but acclaimed 2021 film version, you might think you know what the 2016 Broadway hit “Dear Evan Hansen” is about before entering the Connor Palace on Playhouse Square — perhaps some sort of staged Hallmark movie of the week about a teen loner who finds popularity by “just being himself."

But as the plot unfolds and the emotional music commences, it turns out you didn’t know “Dear Evan Hansen” at all, nor how wonderfully the show evolves into a transformative emotional experience. Nor how the show improves with age as it makes its return engagement to Playhouse Square with a cast that may very well rival the Broadway original led by Ben Platt (judging from videoed segments from the original production).

Mark Horning

This is a show designed for parents and teenage children alike. It is a production that will open up dialogues between families as the show is totally relatable to everyone. Chris Howey

"The intriguing story is fully supported by a melodic, often powerful score and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. And it misses the trap of falling into maudlin sentimentality since the book by Steven Levenson has enough snark to keep it all from becoming a trite after-school special."

I wish I could say that the relationship of positive productions by CPH, Ludwig and Sherlock Holmes continue with their latest co-adventure.  Unfortunately, I can’t.  KEN LUDWIG’S MORIARTY: A NEW SHERLOCK HOLMES ADVENTURE is short on clever writing, adventure, humor, pace and enjoyment.  Too bad!

Proven Broadway comedy playwright Ken Ludwig ("Lend Me a Tenor" and "Moon Over Buffalo") and a serviceable professional cast manage to get across a fair amount of disparate plot points from the pages of various books by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle -- all to the satisfaction of Cleveland Play House audience members sitting contentedly before this new Sherlock Holmes concoction. But one thing's of no mystery: There's nothing new about "Moriarty: A New Sherlock Holmes Adventure."

It has the comedy profile of a dated episode of "The Love Boat" combined with the riveting suspense of "Scooby-Doo." It employs so many tired jokes and well-worn tropes, the low-energy script generates sighs rather than guffaws.
