AMELIE is the type of musical that some will find charming, others, like myself, will find it a lesser musical.  The show gets a very creditable production at Mercury Theatre.

With a little bit of work on the technical side of things this could be a delightful summer theater outing. Hopefully, as the production moves forward it will evolve. I would also suggest reading the synopsis of the plot by googling Amélia The Musical and clicking on the Wikipedia offering.

In Mercury Theatre’s “Soho Cinders,” a show that received its world premiere in London’s off-West End in 2012 and has rarely been seen elsewhere since, the Cinderella story has been significantly re-envisioned.  Its infrequent stagings are no doubt due to the nature of its reincarnation as a decidedly naughty modern musical rather than the quality of the work itself, which is arguably some of Stiles and Drewe’s best.

Even though the overall pace of the show seems a bit lethargic, and the British colloquialisms and accents are incomprehensible at times, the music shines forth. That makes Soho Cinders a must-see for those who relish new musicals that are willing to take chances.

Last year's live TV broadcast of the musical “Hairspray” was a heavily promoted, overproduced and underperforming $10 million affair.  It was, in short, the artistic antithesis of the under-produced yet absolutely delightful Mercury Theatre Company rendition .

This is the final show of the Mercury summer season, with next season being their 20^th anniversary. It will be hard to top this season, which has included fine productions of Carousel and La Cage Aux Folles. But I wouldn’t bet against them.

What defines the Mercury production is that it is an unfortunate amalgam of other productions of this show -- farcical, campy, comedic and charming in spurts, and rarely finding the right balance or holding it for long.  This production works best – works brilliantly, in fact – when it addresses the dignity and resilience of its hero Albin, played by Brian Marshall, and when it does so in song.
