Mark Horning

For a small non-equity community theater this show poses a lot of problems to produce but with careful selection of the various actors and a lot of hard work and practice they pull it off stupendously. This is one of the better productions of this work that you will find.

The “BIG STORM” is not arriving until early Sunday morning so I would hop on a ticket or three for tonight’s 7:30 p.m. performance in spite of the cold. If a good laugh is what you need to warm up then this show is a good bet (especially in the second act).

CAPSULE JUDGMENT:  SHREK THE MUSICAL is a green-tastic script, with a strong score. It’s moral is to accept others for who they are, rather than judging them by their appearance.  It teaches self-acceptance, finding your own true self, and the importance of friendship and love that embraces your quirks and imperfections.  Be aware that this is a stage show and children who have seen the movie may be expecting more gimmicks than will appear on stage.

If you are looking for a fun holiday show to take the family without the word “Carol” or “Story” in the title this is a safe bet. The extremely talented cast will have you laughing at the jokes and nodding at the message that all creatures have value. It is time well spent seeing live theater as a family unit and it is what happy memories are built from.

While being a very entertaining non-musical series of movies, the stage musical tends to throw too much at us for comfort. Sometimes less is more. Some serious snipping needs to be done in order to make this show easier to view. Regardless, CVLT fans will love it none the less.

If you are among the many cult followers of the film you will love the stage adaptation of this precious farce as they follow the story line quite closely. Those new to this production will enjoy the zaniness that is taken to the “emph” power. Farce at its finest, this is a killer show.

There is a good reason why CVLT has kept the stage lit for 95 years. Great people with great works attract great audiences. It is a partnership that is bound to succeed. Ken Ludwig’s adaptation of Agatha Christie’s “Murder on the Orient Express” comes alive in all its glory in spite of the small venue. Well worth checking it out.

It is always a joy when the right combination of cast and crew are gathered for an uproariously funny comedy. You will need a scorecard to keep up with the various les histoires de coeur (affairs of the heart). The laughs are non-stop from start to finish. Come see this show for a good laugh.

It never ceases to amaze when Chagrin Valley Little Theatre takes on a major production that fills their tiny stage. “Newsies” uses every single square inch of space and somehow does it without the actors bumping into each other. This show has its moments that make it worth the price of the ticket.

Mark Horning

Chagrin Valley Little Theatre has a reputation for producing grand and extravagant shows in its 262 seat theater and “A Gentleman’s Guide To Love And Murder” is an excellent example of this art. The show is truly funny, has amazing singing, great acting and wonderful live music. If you have not witnessed their brand of theater it is time that you should with this show. There are only three more shows left so don’t dottle.

This 35 year old dark comedy chestnut of a musical still manages to bring a smile and a laugh to audience members, especially when superbly done. Chagrin Valley Little Theatre fills the stage with equal amounts of whimsy, fun and Doo-Wop making for an enjoyable theater experience.
