"...families can carry a lot of baggage, and this found family packs the bar so full with theirs that a 110-minute show is not nearly enough time to satisfyingly tap their depths."

Dr. Yuko Kurahashi

The play’s focus could be on the changing political and social landscape of Philadelphia and the nation, with an emphasis on activism for social justice, equality, and anti-poverty as the city (and other US cities) face gun violence, drug epidemics, civil forfeiture, housing problems, unemployment, and federal funding cuts. These problems—in resonance with today—are present in the background of the play, never clearly and strongly expressed in the script. Hudes touches on many issues that don’t fit neatly into one play. Yet a group of committed performers delivers both public and personal stories about the bar, bringing their humanity and drama to the forefront.

Walking into an unfamiliar bar full of regulars can be intimidating. Daphne’s Dive, however, makes room for one more.
